We had a party when my little girl turned five. She and I had a lot of fun making the invitation cards by hand, I cut and wrote them out, while she glued and came up with some ideas. The lady duck in the front is her own design, flower hat and all.

B is For Bread
I have tasted fancy dishes and eaten at fine restaurants many times in my life. I have sampled the strange and unfamiliar. I have found fresh favorites and discovered new ingredients, but nothing tastes so delicious to me as the flatbread I ate as a child. Tortillas de harina, a bread made out of wheat flour and […]

My Favorite Chocolate Cake
I love this cake! I first made it for my daughter’s fifth birthday party this past May, and since then it has become my favorite chocolate cake. It is soft, light, and very moist. It is also an unfussy cake, it doesn’t need icing, but it’s delicious with it too. I found the original recipe […]

Raspberry Cheese Coffee Cake
This cake is very easy to make, it’s ready in just thirty minutes and it’s delicious, with a soft, tender texture. What more do you need? Ingredients 1 package of cream cheese, softened at room temperature ½ cup butter (1 stick), softened 1 cup sugar 2 large eggs ¼ milk 1 ¾ cups flour […]

Fresh Apple Cake
I always make this cake at this time of year, when apples are plentiful and the weather calls for heavier, more substantial cakes. The recipe is very simple, and what I like the most about this cake is that it is made by hand, without an electric mixer, which can crush the delicate pieces of […]

The best cupcakes
I have been looking for a recipe for cupcakes that I can call my favorite, and I think I have found it. A lady I know gave me the recipe for these moist, fluffy little cakes that are fast and easy to make. I changed the recipe a bit, because I prefer to use plain flour instead […]

Postcards from Pakistan
Chicken boti, chicken kebab on a charcoal grill at Dera Restaurant. View of the open-air kitchen from my table. The cooks. Dinner was yummy. To see more postcards, go here .

Dressing Up in Pakistan
Weddings in Lahore are dressy affairs that play an important part in people’s social calendar. The dress code is formal, expensive and glittery. Having a party dress made in Lahore goes something like this: First you buy the fabric. Pictured here are two kinds of silk jamawar. Both fabrics were white with the details in gold. I […]

Five Things I’ve Had To Learn As An Expat
Living in Pakistan has meant that I have had to learn new ways of doing things. Coming here from a different culture and a different religious tradition, I’ve had to forget certain habits and condition myself to suppress manners and reactions that are natural to me, but that in this culture would be out of place […]

Five Cultural Observations About Pakistan
Most houses in Lahore have a square shape, a flat roof and very large windows that are often covered up with thick outdoor shades called chiks. There is always at least one terrace. Cars and driveways are washed every day. Brooms and mops don’t have a stick. Traditional brooms are a bunch of needles that are tied […]

A is for My Daughter
My little girl’s name begins with an A. She is a five-year-old bundle of energy, a smart, inquisitive child, with a strong temper and a will of her own, but also with a tender, surprisingly vulnerable side. She has become a little lady, tall and slim, with dark, glossy hair that is never long enough. […]

Gray Day
I’m feeling pretty sorry for myself today. It’s been one of those days when everything piles on and I don’t have the strength to put on a happy face. The word “Mama” being uttered every five two minutes jars on my nerves. I am homesick, and loneliness feels like a load on my shoulders that I can’t shake […]

The First Year in Review
My baby boy is now fourteen months. He is no longer a helpless, fragile bundle of limbs, but an eager explorer of the world around him. I remember the early days of his life and I marvel at how far we have come. The nights he wouldn’t sleep, the mornings when I felt like death, the throbbing, painful […]

Around the World in 80 Clicks
My friend Charlotte, who was my first blogging friend, has tagged me for a meme for mothers who live in far away lands. I can answer the call perfectly, because I am a mother, and I am definitely in a far away land. Five Things I Enjoy About Motherhood On a hard day it’s difficult to […]

The right dose
My hands are full caring for two children these days. My baby boy is now six months old, and he is a placid, friendly child, with a ready smile and an easy temper. He is soft, like a pillow, with a tasty double chin and the promise of a dimple on his right cheek. He […]

106 books
I haven’t done a meme in quite a while, and I find myself in need of some lighthearted amusement today so I have turned to my friend Helen, who did this book meme some time ago. My reading has been kind of stale these past few months. I am stuck on The People’s History of the United […]

Another Book Meme
I have not been tagged for this meme, but I’m doing it anyway, because I love memes, and I love books, so I cannot resist. Number of books you own: I’ve lost count. Some time last year we had nearly five hundred, but since then we’ve brought two metal trunks full of my husband’s old […]

Daniel Deronda
My feelings about George Eliot’s last book are mixed. The story is captivating and very often I could not wait to pick it up again, but I also found myself skimming through several passages that were dreary and repetitive, and I was bored by the lack of dialogue. Pages-long, wordy paragraphs slowed the pace, especially when the […]

The Noodle and Hard Times
I have just finished reading Hard Times. It took me longer than usual because I put it away for a few days, as I could not get into the first few chapters. This is only my second Dickens, but I liked it very well. And chapter nine of the second book provided me with a […]

Cold Comfort Farm
I am not sure how this book caught my attention years ago. Stella Gibbons is not a very well-known name, but it should be, because she had a talent for inventing memorable characters that one would wish to know in real life. Her books are full of humour and charm and gentle wit. ”Cold Comfort Farm” is a […]
